She crept toward the living room, careful not to make a sound. The voices grew clearer with every step.
On the couch sat Eric—wide awake now—and a woman Vanessa had never seen before. She was cradling the baby gently in her arms.
Vanessa’s stomach flipped.
“Eric,” she said firmly, stepping into the room, “what is going on?”
Both heads snapped toward her. The woman looked startled, guilty even. Eric’s face drained of color.
“Vanessa, please,” he started, standing up quickly. “I was going to explain—”
The woman cut him off. “She deserves to know now.”
Vanessa crossed her arms, her voice trembling with anger. “Know what? That my husband has a secret child? That you’ve both been hiding this from me?”
Eric shook his head frantically. “It’s not what you think. A few weeks ago, I got a call… from her.” He gestured toward the woman. “Her sister passed away unexpectedly. This baby—Liam—is her nephew. She didn’t have anyone else to take him, so she tracked me down. Because…” He swallowed hard. “…because there’s a chance he’s mine.”
Vanessa’s heart stopped. “Yours?”
Eric nodded slowly, his eyes filled with shame. “Before I met you, I had a short relationship with her sister. She never told me she was pregnant. I had no idea. But when Liam was left without a guardian, they found me. I didn’t want to tell you until I was sure. That’s why I ordered the DNA test.”
The room was silent except for the baby’s soft whimpers. Vanessa felt the weight of a thousand emotions crashing down at once—betrayal, anger, heartbreak.
She turned to the woman. “And you just showed up here? With a baby?”
Tears welled in the woman’s eyes. “I didn’t know where else to go. If Liam really is Eric’s, then he deserves to know. And Liam deserves a father.”
Vanessa looked at the baby—innocent, unaware of the storm raging around him. Her chest ached. None of this was his fault.
Finally, she whispered, “When will you get the results?”
“Any day now,” Eric said softly. “And when they come, I promise—we’ll face this together. No more secrets.”
Vanessa took a deep breath, her whole world spinning. She didn’t know if her marriage would survive this. But one thing was certain: life as she knew it had changed forever.
