Alleged killer of Charlie Kirk is not cooperating, Utah Governor says

Tyler Robinson, 22, is in custody following the fatal shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University (UVU) on September 10. The incident occurred while Kirk was addressing an audience of around 3,000 people. A single rifle shot from a nearby rooftop struck him in the neck, and he died roughly 90 minutes later at a hospital. The shocking event triggered widespread panic and launched an intensive manhunt.

Investigators quickly traced the shooter’s path across campus rooftops and into a wooded area where a rifle was later recovered. Authorities released images of the suspect and offered a $100,000 reward. Within 33 hours, Robinson was arrested after a family member tipped off the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, reportedly sharing that Robinson had confessed or strongly implied involvement in the shooting.

Governor Spencer Cox, who confirmed the arrest, shared that Robinson had recently grown more politically outspoken. Family members recalled a dinner prior to the shooting where Robinson criticized Kirk and discussed his upcoming appearance at UVU. Investigators are now examining this context to assess potential motive.

Digital evidence has also surfaced. Robinson’s roommate, described as a romantic partner, shared phone messages believed to be from Robinson. The texts discussed retrieving a rifle from a “drop point,” hiding it in a bush, and observing the area. Investigators photographed the screen, which added significant weight to the case against Robinson.

Despite this evidence, Robinson has refused to cooperate with authorities. Governor Cox emphasized on national news programs that while Robinson remains silent, people close to him—including his roommate—are cooperating fully. The roommate, who allegedly had no knowledge of the plan, is actively helping investigators.

Authorities are focusing on four areas: mapping Robinson’s movements, processing forensic evidence, analyzing digital communications, and understanding motive. Robinson remains jailed without bail as the investigation continues.
