The church was decorated beautifully, everyone dressed in their best, and my dad stood at the altar ready to marry his third wife. My stepbrother and I were just kids — he was 6, I was 10 — and we were mostly there for the cake and the photos.
Everything was going smoothly until the preacher asked the traditional question:
“Does anyone here object to this marriage?”
To everyone’s horror — and my dad’s absolute shock — my tiny 6-year-old stepbrother politely raised his hand.
You could hear the air leave the room.
My dad turned pale.
Guests leaned forward.
The bride froze mid-smile.
My dad whispered, trying to stay calm:
“Buddy… why are you objecting?”
My stepbrother took a deep breath, looked around at the silent church, and proudly said the one word no one expected:
“Because.”
Just because.
No reason. No explanation. No follow-up.
He simply felt that was enough.
The entire place erupted in laughter. Even the preacher had tears in his eyes from trying not to crack up. The bride bent down, kissed him on the head, and said:
“Fair enough. But can we please continue?”
And that was it — the most dramatic, heart-stopping, yet unintentionally hilarious wedding objection ever made… by a 6-year-old who just wanted to be included.
To this day, it’s still the funniest family wedding story we have.
