The Penny-in-the-Door Trick: What It Really Means — And Why Drivers Need to Be Alert

Finding a penny wedged into your car door handle might seem like a harmless prank or a weird coincidence… but many drivers don’t realize it can be a warning sign of a dangerous trick used by thieves.

Here’s what it could mean — and why you should pay attention.

Criminals sometimes place a coin, usually a penny or small piece of metal, inside the passenger-side door handle. That’s the side most drivers don’t check before getting in. When you unlock your car and drive off, the jammed handle prevents the door from fully locking.

You think the car is secure.
They know it isn’t.

The thief then follows you or waits until you step away. While you’re inside a store, pumping gas, or even walking into your home, they simply open the unlocked passenger door and grab whatever’s inside — bags, wallets, laptops, anything within reach.

Some criminals even wait until the driver gets out again, taking advantage of the moment the car is left unattended.

It’s a simple trick… and that’s why it works.

If you ever notice a coin, wedge, toothpick, or even folded paper stuffed into your door handle, remove it immediately and check that all doors lock properly before driving away. And if it happens more than once, let security or the police know — it could mean someone is watching your vehicle.

One tiny penny can be a big red flag — and knowing the trick just might keep you a step ahead.
