My Husband Goes on Vacation Every Year Without Me or Our Kids—So I Called His Mom to Find Out Why

For the past 12 years, my husband has been going on a week-long vacation with his family to the islands. Every single year, he’s left me and our kids behind. When I finally asked him why, he said it was because his mom didn’t want any in-laws tagging along—and he didn’t want to take care of the kids by himself.

This year, just a week before his departure, I couldn’t keep quiet anymore. I called my mother-in-law and asked, “Why don’t you allow Tom to take us on vacation? Don’t you consider us family?”

She was shocked. “What are you talking about, dear?” she said. “My husband and sons… they always wanted to include you all, but your husband never brought it up.”

I was stunned. I realized my husband never stood up for us or tried to make a change. It was easier for him to keep things the same than to risk upsetting his mom.

After that call, I confronted him honestly. I told him how hurt and excluded I felt, and that this tradition needed to change—for our family’s sake.

It wasn’t easy. He admitted he was scared of conflict with his mother and overwhelmed by the thought of managing the kids on vacation. But after many talks, he agreed to include me and the kids next year.

Families can have complicated dynamics, but it’s important to stand up for what matters most—your own. I hope our story encourages others to speak up before years slip away without true togetherness.
